El Presidente's Bday - March 2007

For a few of you this is only your first or second Friday Night Drinking Club (FNDC) e-mail. As for the usuals, seeing this e-mail in your inbox probably comes with the warm, reminiscent feelings of greeting an old friend.

I was only in attendance at the last FNDC for a brief time. But, it was good to see that kind of turn out. There were quite a few new faces and it was great being in a smoke-free bar.

Naturally, after that kind of success this Friday comes with a great deal of anticipation. It also comes overshadowed by quite an eventful Saturday. This Saturday is one of the high holidays of the FNDC, St. Patrick's Day!

For those who don't know the legend St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, he drove all the snakes from Ireland and into those little cans marked "Peanut Brittle" that you give to your friends and when they open the can a snake pops out of them and then they're all surprised. Because of this contribution to humanity we celebrate by drinking green beer. I'm not sure how these two things became affiliated; but, I'm sure it has something to do with the deep-pocketed lobbyists from the Green-Dye Industrial Complex. Even though this marvelous day always occurs during Lent, it is by tradition that drinking is allowed on St. Patrick’s Day.

St. Patrick's Day also happens to fall on the birthday of your magnanimous Presidente! Viva El Presidente! Who’s age, much like a tree's, can only be accurately determined by cutting him in half and counting his rings. Of course that would kill your beloved Presidente; so, instead let us celebrate the growth of another ring! With your support I, much like a tree, will grow thicker, denser, and knottier with each passing year!

Coincidentally, this Friday is also happens to be the 168th anniversary of the German apothecary Eduard Simon’s discovery of polystyrene or more commonly known as Styrofoam. In celebration with El Presidente’s birthday and St. Patrick’s Day, we shall cheers and rub polystyrene cups to rejoice these three monumental occasions.

Not wanting to break with tradition I propose a two day celebration. On Friday night we will head to our usual after-work watering hole, Bottlescrew Bill's. And on Saturday we will head to a more exotic location, The Atlantic Trap & Gill.

Saturday will be quite a busy day for all pubs, bars, and anywhere else they may have green dye. So heading out in the late afternoon/early evening may be best to avoid the lines. I'm planning on heading out quite early; but, I will have my cell on me if you are planning to meet up with the party later on. As always...

El Presidentially Yours,

-El Presidente.

P.S. Some of this e-mail was written by El Vicepresidente, take a wild guess as to which paragraph.
